The piston ring achieves gas compression after repeated work to ensure the operation of the machine. Because the piston has been doing such violent movement during the operation of the reciprocating compressor, the piston ring of the reciprocating compressor is very difficult due to the increased use time, errors in the installation process, and improper operation. Prone to failure. There are generally three types of failures in piston rings:


Ⅰ. Piston ring blocking failure of reciprocating compressor


In the process of making and designing the piston ring, due to the objective requirements of the position and function of the reciprocating compressor where the piston ring is located, the volume of the piston ring is relatively small, and the gap between the ring grooves is very small. Generally,  the volume of a substance will expand when heated and will shrink when cooled, so the piston ring is easy to expand and jam during the heating process.


Ⅱ. Piston ring wear failure of reciprocating compressor


1. If the piston of the reciprocating compressor is designed to be relatively large, the gap between the piston and the cylinder will be relatively small. During the operation of the reciprocating boil off gas compressor, the piston will continue to rub the cylinder, and the gas generated inside will also accelerate the piston.


2. If the piston of the reciprocating compressor is designed to be relatively small, the gap between the piston and the cylinder will be relatively large, although the friction between the piston and the cylinder will not occur during the operation of the reciprocating compressor, because the gap between the two is too large, the generated gas will continue to impact the lubricating film, and the lubricating film will be damaged over time.


Ⅲ. Piston ring fracture failure of reciprocating compressor


Piston ring fracture is generally caused by two conditions:


One is due to errors in the design of the piston ring and the cylinder liner, resulting in an incomplete match between the two. During the operation of the reciprocating compressor, the gap between the two is relatively small, and the dual effect of generating gas is added, causing the fracture of the piston ring;


The second is that although the piston ring and the cylinder liner are completely matched, as the use time accelerates, the wear condition becomes more and more serious, and eventually it will break through the critical value of material elasticity and cause the piston ring to break.

As a consumable part, the piston ring must be replaced after a period of use. Therefore, in the process of maintaining the reciprocating compressor, if you find that the temperature of the cylinder changes or the pressure drops, causing noise, you must check it in time to prevent major failures due to damage to the piston ring.
